Salt Dough Handprint Santa Ornaments

There's nothing I love more than a cute craft project that doesn't require a trip to Michael's. A simple project that comes out looking very similar to the Pinterest Inspiration. I have more Pinterest fails on my scorecard than you could even count, but this Santa salt dough ornament is making up for those flunks. These Santa ornaments are something I am going to treasure for years to come!

A huge shout out to the beautiful blog Babyccino Kids for the amazing directions. I'm not going to go into detail on every tiny step because Babyccino did such a wonderful job with the how-to on this post, but I'll share a few tips we learned along the way and the recipe below.

Salt Dough Recipe:

1/2 Cup of Salt

1 Cup of All Purpose Flour

1/2 Cup of Water

A sprinkling of Cinnamon for a festive scent

  • Mix Ingredients in a bowl and knead by hand for 5 minutes.

  • Roll out dough about 1/3 inch thick and make imprints with little one's hands.

  • Cut out hand shape using a sharp kitchen knife.

Recipe makes approximately 4-5 handprints.

For Baking:

Preheat oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dust cookie sheet with flour.

Lay shapes on cookie sheet.

Bake for 2 hours and flip over to bake for another 2 hours.

Tips

After taking the handprints out of the oven, we let them fully harden over night before painting.

I used acrylic paint and it took 3-4 coats per color, as the dough is porous.

For the fine details on the face and hat, I used the tip of a shish-kabob stick.

Make sure you poke a hole in the ornament before baking using the end of a shisk-kabob stick (I learned this the hard way).
