Our Homework and School Zones at Home

We started back at in person school this week after a year of homeschooling. We are slowly converting our homeschooling space into a homework friendly study zone. I am hoping that by setting up some routines and dedicated spaces for all things school, we will be able to stay organized for the year ahead.

Our backpack drop area by the front door was a DIY. The twinkle lights were leftover from our wedding almost 8 years ago. And our table is sold out, but you could use any kitchen table or small dining table to recreate this setup in your own home.

I posted a little tour of our homework area and drop areas on instagram. I had lots of questions about where things were from (mostly amazon!), so here’s a little roundup of our setup.

Calendar: We keep a monthly dry erase calendar in our study room to track all things school related—tests, days off, non-uniform days etc. The exact one we use is sold out, but the one linked is super similar (and a steal!).

Chairs: We bought 2 extra of the same chairs we use in the kitchen to use in our ltitle school area. If we have my parents or guests over we can grab the extra chairs and add them to our kitchen table. I also love this style because everything wipes off of them with little effort.

Wall Sconces: We used Nesting with Grace’s magic light trick to rig these up on the wall. We rarely turn them on, but they’re so fun and draw your eye to the bulletin boards of art when you walk in our home.

Rug: I am so glad I did not spend a lot of money on a rug for this space. After a year of homeschooling, our rug has stains from every art tool imaginable. I do love having a rug in here to make it feel more homey and less sterile though.

Bulletin Boards: We have one for each kiddo and this is where we hang their art and “treasures” that they bring home.

Magazine Files: I have a file box for each kiddo—I keep any important notes from the teacher, handwriting books etc in here. I love that these are sturdy plastic.

Cart: Ours is from Ikea, but Target has an almost identical one as well.

Containers for cart: These are so great for holding all of the homework essentials—pens, crayons, glue sticks etc.

Star Garland: I keep this garland wrapped around the bulletin boards all year around, but also love having it to use for birthday parties and other celebrations. A great Amazon find!

Hooks: We have a hook for each person in our family. In the Summer, it holds a hat for everyone. In Spring and Fall you’ll find a rain jacket and umbrella for each person. Come Winter, a jacket is on every hook to keep us from hunting for one before we head to school.

Printer: We keep a printer in our homework space to print any homework. I highly recommend a wireless one with ecotank ink cartridges. We have the model linked. I like that it is white and blends in. The ink has lasted me an entire. year (and you know how much I print for Magic Playbook!). The print quality could be better, but it’s reliable and has saved us money on ink.
