Our Ice Cream Truck Family Halloween Costume

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Radio Flyer. The opinions and text are all mine.

We’re officially a few days into Fall and Halloween costumes are on my mind! Ever since Brody was born, I’ve had so much fun planning a themed family costume for our little crew. I might be biased, but I think our costume last year took the cake and will forever go down as my favorite.

Our ice cream truck family halloween costume was not only so much fun for the kiddos, but it was pretty simple to create.

I am a sucker for using a wagon on halloween--especially the classic Radio Flyer Wagons I grew up playing with. For Brody’s 2nd halloween, we turned his little Classic Walker Wagon into a garbage truck. And last year, we used the full sized All Terrain Cargo Wagon to create our ice cream truck.

Not only does a wagon make the best prop, but it is so much easier and safer to haul the kids from house to house when it is dark out in a wagon. Plus, it’s a great place to stash their candy/glow sticks/water bottles as you’re walking around the neighborhood.

Creating an Ice Cream Truck From a Wagon//

We used the Radio Flyer All Terrain Cargo Wagon for our ice cream truck. The wooden side panels make it easy to assemble and the real air tires had us hoping over curbs and through grass with no problem.

PS: If you do not have a wagon yet, Radioflyer.com has 1 day deal on October 1st where their wagons are all marked down 20-30% off! This even includes their customizable Build-A-Wagons.

To create the ice cream truck shape, I used white foam boards. The standard sized foam boards fit perfectly on the All-Terrain Cargo wagon, which saved me lots of time that I would have spent on cutting.

A Few Assembly Tips:

  • Start with the sides to create the truck shape.

  • Duct tape ribbons/string to the inside of the foam boards. You will use this to tie the foam board to the wooden wagon slats.

  • Create the front by using foam board and covering about half of the top of the wagon.

  • Paint the pink stripe with acrylic paint.

  • Tape all edges of the foam board with white duct tape. This is the key to making it look like a professional DIY job. The duct tape covers any rough cuts and helps it look seamless when you fit the pieces together.

For the Halloween Ice Cream Costumes:

Keep it simple!

  • White long Sleeved shirts

  • Coordinating bow-ties

  • White aprons

  • Paper soda jerk hats

For the Final Touch:

We added a bluetooth speaker in the back of the wagon that played ice cream truck music as we walked up and down the street.

Brody still talks about our costumes from last year. The wagon lived in our house for at least a month after halloween and Brody played with it daily.

I can’t wait to share our family costume with you this year--I think it is going to be a fun one too!
