How Owlet is Helping Me Get More Sleep With a Newborn

Thank-you Owlet for collaborating on this post. Owlet provided us with their new Owlet Smart Sock 2, but all opinions are our own. We only share products and brands we truly love and use.

I love discovering devices and products that make motherhood easier. Welcoming a new baby home is already stressful enough and anything that helps make the transition a little easier is worth every penny. The Owlet is just that. After hearing rave reviews from lots of you, we have given it a try and I can truly say it has been a sanity saver.

If there is one thing I learned the hard way about newborn life the first time around, it is the importance of a decent night of sleep for mom. I am not one of those people that can survive on just a few hours of sleep. With Brody, I was an anxious new mother. I remember staying up at night just to watch him breathe. Or putting my hand on his chest the entire night to make sure he was ok. By the time the sun rose, I was a complete zombie.

When we found out we were expecting Isla, I knew I needed to do things differently. I knew I needed to squeeze in every ounce of sleep when I could. I knew I needed to calm my anxiety at nighttime. The Owlet Smart Sock 2 was at the top of my list for gear when baby #2 came along.

Now that we are approaching 3 weeks at home with our sweet girl, I see why so many of my friends have raved about Owlet. It has brought me peaceful sleep between feedings, which I so desperately missed with Brody.

What is the Owlet?

Owlet Smart Sock 2 is a device inside soft cotton sock that is designed to notify parents if their little one’s heart rate or oxygen levels fall outside of a preset range. The device pairs via Bluetooth to an app that allows parents to see real-time readings of their little one’s oxygen levels and heart rate.

Here is why I am loving the Owlet Smart Sock 2.

It is easy to check on Isla.

A quick glance at my nightstand and I can see the glowing green light of the Owlet base station. This tells me that her oxygen and heart rate are within the preset range and the device is hooked up and working. If I want to know more specific details, I can open the app on my phone and see a real-time reading.

It is comfortable for Isla to wear.

The little sock with the sensor is small and unobstructed. It’s made from a soft, hypoallergenic cotton and can be worn on either foot. We swap the foot we put it on each night. Isla does not even flinch when we put it on and it fits perfectly in her little footed pajamas. It also comes with three different sock sizes, so it will grow with her as she grows.

No false alarms so far.

We tried another device when Brody was a newborn that clipped onto his diaper and monitored his breathing. It was helpful, but it gave us false alarms nearly every night. Being startled awake by the alarm certainly did not help my anxiety. With the Owlet Smart Sock 2, we have yet to have a false alarm.
