A Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Mom

It might seem too early to be thinking about fall, but as we head into the back to school season I think we all start craving cooler temperatures. While summer is my favorite season, I love those first days of grabbing a sweater in the morning.

Capsule wardrobes are a great way to focus in on those pieces that serve as the basis for your closet. Capsule wardrobes also help to guide any purchases you may need to make.

My fall capsule wardrobe is full of sweaters in neutral shades, denim, jackets for layering, my trusty striped shirt, and lots of leopard.

This fall, leopard will continue to be a great way to add some interest to your outfit. I fully subscribe to the notion that leopard is a neutral. It is my go to when I want a slightly more put together look. It could be a pair of leopard loafers, scarf or sweater, but you can’t go wrong with leopard.

Two colors that will be popular this fall are deep navy and all shades of purple. I love the idea of a floral maxi dress with varying shades of purple. Layering is always key in the fall and this year capes will be a popular layering piece.

Camo is another up and comer for fall. I don’t know if I’m on board yet, but this camo sweatshirt is an easy price point to give this trend a try.

Tops

Striped top // A striped shirt is a staple for me every season. For warmer days, I wear it alone. On cooler days, I wear it under a sweater blazer.

Sweater Blazer // For those days when it’s cool in the morning, but you know will warm up quickly, a sweater blazer is a great option.

Crewneck Sweater // I favor crewneck sweaters in neutral shades (grey, black and navy). If a v-neck is more your style, this is a great option. And if you’re looking to invest in cashmere, the Everlane cashmere crew is my go to.

Leopard Sweater // A leopard sweater instantly elevates your look. This cashmere option is a splurge. I’d stalk it until it goes on sale.

Chambray Shirt // I love to wear a chambray shirt with black jeans and a pair of loafers. It’s a go to outfit that never fails me!

Basic Tees // A great basic tee works year round. In the fall, it’s perfect for layering underneath a sweater blazer or cape. My current favorite is $8 and comes in 10 different colors.

Eyelet Top // My love for eyelet is only eclipsed by my love for stripes and leopard. I’ve wore eyelet all summer and plan to continue that trend into fall with a long sleeve option in a neutral color.

Utility Jacket // When I bought my army utility jacket over 5 years ago, I had no idea how much I’d reach for it. It works with a striped shirt, eyelet or a neutral sweater.

Moto Jacket // For the occasional girl’s night out and date night, I love to throw on a leather moto jacket. It’s great when you need a light layer.

Bottoms

Skinny Jeans // You can never go wrong a pair of medium wash, high waist skinny jeans. I wear my favorite pair throughout the year no matter the season. They truly work with any top and pair of shoes.

Black Distressed Jeans // Last spring I pulled out a pair of black, distressed jeans that I hadn’t worn in months. I immediately realized the distressing added a little edge to my go to sweater and jeans combo.

Purple Floral Dress // I don’t wear a lot of dresses because I can’t seem to find a style that’s comfortable and flattering for my postpartum body. If I did, this purple floral maxi dress would be the color and style I’d want to add to my wardrobe!

If it’s within your budget and you’re looking to get out of your comfort zone, try a pair of cropped, straight leg jeans or overalls (these maternity overalls look so cute too).

Shoes & Accessories

Loafers or Flats // Once I had kids, I quickly realized slip on shoes are where it’s at. Whether it’s a pair of leopard flats or loafers in a neutral shade, these are my most worn shoes come fall.

Black Chelsea Boots // When we get into the later fall months and my loafers aren’t cutting it anymore, I reach for a pair of booties.

Statement Earrings // These gorgeous earrings remind me of an updated version of something my grandmother would have worn. We love that they are made by on of our sweet guest contributors and momma society moms!

Cape // A cape is a fun way to spice up an outfit while staying warm.
