Newborn baths. Did you know that the World Health Organization recommends delaying a newborn's 1st bath for at least 24 hours, yet most hospitals still routinely give baths within 2 hours of birth?
▫️
I talk about this in Birth prep, but thought it would be helpful to share some of benefits of delaying baby's first bath here too. It's one of the many things you can request when you give birth #themoreyouknow
▫️
+Vernix, the white substance that covers many babies when they are born is a magical substance. It is an awesome moisturizer, full of nutrients, has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Rub it in to your babies skin like lotion rather than washing it off.
▫️
+Temperature stability
▫️
+Stabilizes baby's blood sugar
▫️
+Less risk of weight loss
▫️
+Decrease in jaundice
▫️
+Longer immediate skin-to-skin time
▫️
+Multiple studies have show an significant likelihood of increased exclusive breastfeeding success when bath is delayed.
▫️
+Hospital workers will usually wear gloves when they are caring for your baby before it is bathed. This makes the germaphobe in me happy.
▫️
There are some situations where a newborn bath should happen right away--like if the baby has hepatitis or HIV etc, so always talk to your care provider.
▫️
What can you do? If you want to delay your newborn's first bath, just ask. Put it in your birth wishes. Some hospitals will have requirements--like for Isla she had to be bathed before they would discharge us--but there is often a lot of flexibility in when exactly that bath happens.
▫️
How soon after birth did your little one have their 1st bath? What was the standard at your little one's place of birth?
I tried a menstrual cup---here are my honest thoughts.
▫️
I can count on one hand the number of periods I have had in the past 4.5 years. I felt a bit like a middle schooler getting her cycle for the first time when it returned after weaning Isla. What do I do? Why does this hurt so much? Do tampons expire? You get the picture.
▫️
After talking to some friends about menstrual cups, I decided to give it a try. Here are my thoughts after using it for the first cycle.
▫️
+It is very hands on. I don't consider myself a prude by any means---I mean I teach moms about birth and vaginas for a living, but the first time I used a menstrual cup it still felt awkwardly involved.
▫️
+The learning curve is large. So many of you told me this and it is true. I struggled getting the fold right and figuring out how to get the cup to open inside almost every time. It took LOTS of readjusting.
▫️
+Once it was in, it was surprisingly comfortable.
▫️
+Seeing the contents in it for the first time is a little shocking.
▫️
+I wish I would have bought a 2 pack with different sized cups.
▫️
+Sterilizing it with kitchen pots/utensils weirds me out. If you’re coming over for dinner, don’t worry I am going to buy a pan just for it.
▫️
+The quiz on @putacupinit was really helpful in picking one to try---there are so many brands.
▫️
Will I be using it again? Yup! By the end of the week I really liked the concept. No weird period smells, comfortable, cleanly. Next time I am going to try a smaller cup size to see if it is easier to insert since that was a big struggle.
▫️
Have you tried a menstrual cup? What has been your experience? What brands have you liked?

🌟How to do a closet clean out on your kid's closet🌟
▫️
I LOVE this simple closet clean out method the stylish @ericakartak shared on Momma Society this week. Here's her simple strategy for making this process easy.
▫️
Divide everything into 5 piles.
▫️
1. Things to gift to family or friends. This category is the most fun. Take some of those special pieces you loved and gift them to a friend a la Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
▫️
2. Things to keep. If you like an item and think it may still fit in 6 months, keep it.
▫️
3. Things to store. For sentimental pieces, allow yourself to keep one container per child of sentimental pieces. Take pictures of the rest and look back on those for the sweet memories.
▫️
4. Things to sell. This can be a lot of work, so choose wisely only pieces that are worth the effort you will get from the resale value.
▫️
5. Things to donate. Anything left goes in this pile. Load it up into your car right away so it actually gets donated.
▫️
Save this post and pick a weekend to go through your little one's closet before you start loading it with cute outfits for Spring! You can read @ericakartak full post on Momma Society.
▫️
PS I miss Isla’s Arizona closet
